The Bicaz Gorge

Driving Through the Heart of Stone

If Transfăgărășan is the road to the sky, then Bicaz is an adventure into the bowels of the mountain. Here, the cliffs almost meet above the roof of your Mercedes, creating a natural tunnel of adrenaline. This is the place where nature and asphalt merge into one.

Driving Through the Jaws of the Mountain: The Bicaz Experience

Imagine leaving the calm, mirrored waters of the Red Lake (Lacu Roșu) and pointing your Mercedes east along national road DN12C. At first, it feels like an ordinary mountain drive, but within just a few kilometers, the light begins to fade, and the sky above narrows to a thin blue sliver. You are entering the Bicaz Gorge—a place where nature didn’t just build a road; it carved a tunnel into the very flesh of the Carpathians.

This eight-kilometer adventure leads you through a true geological theater. Here, there are no endless horizons like on Transalpina; here, the scale is vertical. The limestone cliffs rise a staggering 300 meters straight up, making you feel simultaneously small and powerful behind the wheel. The hum of your engine reflects off the stone walls, creating a natural symphony that only a true Mercedes enthusiast can fully appreciate.

Although the pass sits at a modest altitude of 850 meters, the sense of majesty is stronger than on any peak. This is a place for slow driving and wide-open eyes. Everywhere you look, there are details worth capturing—from the small stalls of local artisans to wild orchids blooming from cracks in the stone.

When you finally emerge from the gorge at the village of Bicazu Ardelean, the light returns, and the mountain recedes, leaving you with that specific sense of satisfaction. You have passed through the heart of stone. While this year’s edition of THE STAR ROUTE charts different paths, Bicaz remains there—eternal, raw, and waiting for our next shared adventure. Because for us, the road isn’t just asphalt; it’s a story we tell together with our machines.

The road leads you through the three “circles” of this stone kingdom. You pass through the “Gates of Hell” while the canyon still allows you a moment to breathe, but soon you enter the “Vestibule,” where the curves sharpen and the Bicaz River begins to roar louder beside you. However, the most awe-inspiring moment is “Hell’s Neck” (Gâtul Iadului). Here, the cliffs literally loom over the roof of your car, as if the mountain itself wants to embrace you. This is technical driving in its purest form—demanding precision, composure, and a keen sense of your vehicle’s dimensions, especially when passing fellow travelers in the narrowest sections.

The Road Through the Heart of Stone

If you are planning your next adventure in Romania, the name Bicaz Gorge is bound to come to mind. This is not just a mountain pass; it is a rift in the earth itself, where the road winds between sheer limestone walls rising over 300 meters high. For every Mercedes owner, this is a place where engine acoustics and steering precision are experienced in a truly unique way.

Turns that Test Your Mastery

Unlike the sweeping panoramas of Transfăgărășan, the experience here is intimate and technical. Road DN12C offers:

  • Narrow Gorges: In some sections, the cliffs literally loom over the roof of your vehicle.

  • Sharp Switchbacks: They demand full concentration and smooth pedal work—a pure delight for fans of rear-wheel drive dynamics.

  • Breathtaking Shots: Nature has created the perfect lighting here for professional photography of your “Star.”

Iconic Sections of the Pass

The gorge is divided into several emblematic sectors that every Mercedes enthusiast will appreciate:

  • The Gates of Hell (Pârâul Oii): The widest part of the canyon.

  • The Vestibule of Hell (Pridvorul Iadului): Where the cliffs begin to narrow significantly.

  • Hell’s Neck (Gâtul Iadului): The most awe-inspiring segment. Here, the rocks overhang the road, and the distance between the canyon walls is at its minimum. This is the spot for the most dramatic shots of our cars.

Resting by the Red Lake

Just before you enter the narrowest part of the gorge (or immediately after emerging), you will find the Red Lake (Lacu Roșu). This is the ideal spot for a well-deserved break. Created by a natural landslide, the lake—with its distinctive tree trunks rising from the water—is a unique sight that deserves to be seen at least once.

Why are we writing about Bicaz?

At THE STAR ROUTE, we believe that knowing every iconic route in the region makes us better at what we do. While this year’s adventure focuses on other legendary tracks, Bicaz remains on our “Top Locations” list that every Mercedes enthusiast should visit.

💡 Important Note: This year, our convoy is heading toward other hidden gems of the Carpathians. If you want to see which roads we’ve chosen for the current edition of THE STAR ROUTE, check out our active itinerary page.
