Transfagarasan (DN7C)
Redefining adventure: The road like no other
There are roads that simply connect two points, and then there are roads like Transfăgărășan (DN7C). Built as a strategic military route in the 1970s, it stands today as a symbol of engineering triumph over nature. For Mercedes fans, this is the arena where ride comfort meets the brutal beauty of the alpine terrain.
As part of THE STAR ROUTE project, we don’t just pass through—we experience every single switchback.
Transfăgărășan is an engineering feat that seems almost impossible for its time, remaining one of the most imposing monuments to human ambition. Built in the 1970s by order of Nicolae Ceaușescu, the road was designed as a strategic military route to allow rapid troop movement across the Southern Carpathians in the event of an invasion. The cost of its construction was immense—over 6,000 tons of dynamite were used to carve the path through stubborn schist rock, and to this day, official records cannot hide the grueling effort and sacrifice of the thousands of soldiers and workers involved in the project.
What draws drivers from around the globe today is its dramatic architecture, winding like a coiled serpent along the slopes of the Făgăraș Mountains. The route passes through the longest road tunnel in Romania, leading directly to its highest point at the glacial Lake Bâlea. There, the landscape shifts from dense, ancient forests into a raw alpine amphitheater, where the air is sharp and the peaks feel within arm’s reach.
Driving the Transfăgărășan is a rhythmic exercise in precision, consisting of endless switchbacks and open stretches that reveal the true scale of the mountain. Unlike Transalpina, which is higher and more fluid, the sensation here is one of brutal power and engineering audacity, as the road is literally etched into the vertical cliffs. It stands as a symbol of the struggle between man and nature, transformed into the ideal stage for any vehicle that claims excellence in handling and dynamics. It is this combination of historical weight and breathtaking geography that turns Transfăgărășan into a destination that isn’t just visited—it is conquered.
What makes Transfăgărășan so special?
The road winds for 90 km through the highest sections of the Southern Carpathians. When you are behind the wheel of your Mercedes, the experience unfolds in several key stages:
The Forest Ascent: The journey begins with steep climbs under a dense canopy, where the torque of your “Star” is most prominently felt.
Vidraru Dam: One of the most impressive engineering feats, perfect for a short break and photos against the backdrop of the massive dam wall.
The Alpine Section: Above the tree line, the true magic is revealed. The sharp hairpins and open panoramas are where THE STAR ROUTE’s professional photography will capture your vehicle in its full glory.
The Challenge for the Mercedes Enthusiast
Transfăgărășan is not for everyone. The road demands concentration and a technically flawless vehicle. The ascent to Bâlea Lake at an altitude of 2,042 meters is a true test of:
Cooling: Long climbs in lower gears put the engine to work.
Braking: The descent on the other side of the mountain is intense and requires absolute precision.
Suspension: While the road is in good condition, the whims of the mountain can often surprise you with uneven terrain.
